The Concerned Citizens of Kebbi (CCK) have called for the cancellation of the Argungu International Fishing festival to avoid possible spread of Lassa fever and corona virus currently in the country.
This is even as the state government insist they do not have history of Lassa and corona virus.
Speaking in Kaduna on Thursday, the Co-ordinator of the group , Alh Murtala Adamu Kimba disclosed that millions of naira voted for the festival would go a long way in providing infrastructures for the people of the State.
‘Just few days after spending huge amount on rigata, fire outbreak damaged several shops and houses in Yauri and Kamba resulted in loosing hundreds of millions worth of properties as a result of non availability of fire fighting vehicles in the State.
‘ The amount earmarked for the two festivals can procure more that 50 standard fire fighting vehicles for the State capital and all the 21 local government areas of the State.
“While a lot of people are facing serious economic hardship in the State, Atiku Bagudu earmarked over N630 million of Naira to host Yauri Boat Regatta and Argungu International Fishing festival without being sensitive to the economic situation of the State and the national concern of the issues of corona virus in some parts of the country even as the national Assembly has closed down for the same sake.
‘We therefore wish to condemn the rational behind spending billions of Naira in events that cannot generate even N100 million out of the huge Investments.”
To this end,’ we want the Argungu festival and the Yauri Boat regatta canceled over the possible spread of the Corona virus.
When contacted the Special Adviser on Media, Yahaya Sarki said the state do not have a history of Lassa fever or Corona Virus saying, you should know that government must have put in place to curtail the spread of the diseases.
He further described their claim as baseless and reckless saying, the Argungu fishing is an international event which attracts foreign investors to the state.
‘They started the campaign of calumny in Kebbi now they are in Kaduna. All we know is this group have been hijacked by disgruntled politicians.
