Dr Yamori Conde, the Secretary General in Guinea’s Territorial Administration and Decentralisation Ministry, says the Ministry is working with other stakeholders to resolve issues related to the disputed results of the country’s municipal elections.
Conde was quoted as giving the assurance when he received a eighth-member delegation of ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) led by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Wednesday in Conakry.
A statement issued by ECONEC Spokesman, Mr Paul Ejime on Wednesday in Abuja, recalls that the disputes involving the results of 12 constituencies election held in February 2018, were before the court.
This, according to the statement, had stalled local administration in Guinea’s 342 Administrative Districts.
Conde, receiving the delegation on behalf of the Minister, said the issue would be resolved under the Technical Follow-up Committee to ensure the inauguration of elected candidates in 330 constituencies.
He added that the committee would resolve the issue while the court addressed the cases of the disputed 12, according to law.
The Ministry has played a major role in Guinea’s electoral process, including the registration of political parties, coordination of civil society organisations and general administration at national and local levels.
“The country has parliamentary polls in 2019 and a crucial presidential vote in 2020.
On his part, The ECONEC President, Yakubu urged the stakeholders to work towards effective implementation of ECOWAS recommendations on the country’s 2019 presidential election..
The stakeholders, according to him, include Guinea’s Electoral Commission (CENI) Civil society organisations, political parties represented at the National Assembly, and development partners,
He listed the recommendation to include cleaning up the country’s Vote Register, reform of CENI to make it more technical and professional.
“It also includes reform of the legal framework, to address issues related to the use of Envelops for ballot papers and transmission of election results.
“The implementation of these recommendations will ensure a political level playing field to enable CENI deliver credible elections for the deepening of democratic culture in the country.’’
He added that the achievement of these goals would impact positively on the quest for credible elections and consolidation of democracy in the ECOWAS region.Yakubu promised that ECONEC would support capacity strengthening of CENI.
He also called for necessary support of external partners in line with ECONEC’s mandate of assisting its members to live up to their responsibilities.(NAN)
