Acting Managing Director, Skyway Aviation Handling Company Limited (SAHCOL), Basil Agboarumi says the policies of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has led to a growth in export.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Agboarumi made this known on Thursday at the Gateway Forum of the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) in Lagos.
He said that prior to 2015, Nigeria was primarily focused on importation of goods from various countries, adding that the export sector was almost in comatose.
“I think for the first time, we have seen a growth in export. It is because of the policies put in place by the government because Nigeria is really a blessed country, “Agboarumi said.
According to him, some of the major products exported by air were yams and vegetables, stressing that there was need to sustain the growth.
He also lauded the efforts of the government in revamping the aviation industry, particularly with the planned establishment of a new national carrier expected to take off in December.
Agboarumi said that the move would be beneficial to SAHCOL and other passenger and ground handling companies operating in the country.
He, however urged the government to create an enabling environment for ground handling companies to thrive in Nigeria, particularly by reducing tariffs for ground handling equipments imported into the country.
The SAHCOL boss urged the government, through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) or the Ministry of Transportation to help curb unhealthy competition by ground handling companies.
He said this had become necessary due to safety and security concerns as some companies were collecting amounts far below what was recommended for cargo and passenger handling.
Agboarumi also debunked the claim that SAHCOL workers were involved in unwholesome activities such as cargo theft and conniving with suspected drug peddlers.
“We have put strategies and equipments in place to ensure that security of cargo is not compromised at our warehouses.
“As a company, we have zero tolerance to security breach or theft of customer’s cargo,” he added.
Agboarumi disclosed that SAHCOL was was currently having discussions with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to get listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NAN)
