Some villages in the state had in recent times been attacked by armed bandits, where scores of residents were killed.
The Senate Leader told Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara State that the country’s security agencies are doing their best despite many challenges arising from their operations and activities.
“We are facing serious security challenges across the country and it appears that our security forces need to be better mobilised, perhaps even better restructured and funded and this is the essence of setting up this committee,” he said.
He said the committee is in the state to listen all shades of opinion from government, traditional rulers and the people with a view to understanding how the Senate can work with the executive arm, led by President Muhammad Buhari, to make the security forces better and more effective.
He said the visit to Zamfara State is the second by the committee having earlier visited Venue State for same mission.
“We are here to listen more and talk less, so that we get needed information to make a report to the Senate in plenary,” he said.
Responding, Governor Yari said he was fully committed to supporting efforts aimed at bringing an end activity of bandits and other forms of criminality in the state.
Mr. Yari added that his administration has so far spent over N13 Billion on security since assumption of office in 2011.
The Senate ad-hoc committee will hold meeting with traditional rulers, security agencies and other stakeholders in the state and also visit Zurmi and Maradun local government areas to have first-hand information about the killings in the state.
